New car emissions in Europe drop for the first time since 2016, but EU's 2020 target still not met

Image
After three years of rising CO2 emissions from new cars in Europe, they fell sharply in 2020, helped by the trend of electric vehicles, according to a new report. Last year, average emissions from a new car registered in the European Union, the UK, Iceland and Norway fell by 12 percent to 107.8 grams of CO2 per driven kilometre from the 11.5 million cars registered in the 30 countries, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA). The drop of 14.5 grams from 2019 "represented the first decrease observed since 2016," the EEA said. It also "coincides with the phase in of stricter CO2 emissions standards for cars as of January 1, 2020," the European Commission said in a statement. Emissions had risen successively in 2017, 2018 and 2019, driven by the popularity of fuel-efficient but also larger SUVs, interrupting years of steady decline and calling set targets into question. The 2020 level also set a new record performance, beating the 2016 average of 118.1 ...

Google to roll out update for Android users, enable easy sorting of texts in the Messages app

Image
In a recent update, Google India announced that its Messages app will now delete one-time passwords (OTPs) automatically, to stop the single-use codes clogging up users’ inboxes. Also, the app will sort messages into categories like SMS texts, personal transactions, OTPs, offer, and standard personal messages. As per a Google India blog post, all transaction-related messages will automatically be filtered into a separate tab while personal conversations will stay highlighted in your inbox. Google will also separate conversations from saved and unsaved numbers. All of this will be done by the tech giant using a machine learning model. This update will roll out only in India in the coming weeks. "Last year, we expanded spam protection to help reduce the volume of unwanted messages by automatically moving suspected spam messages into a spam folder. To continue to keep your inbox free of clutter, we’re also providing the option to automatically delete your one-time passwords (OTPs)...

Giant comet hailing from distant Oort Cloud spotted in our outer solar system

Image
Space experts have discovered a giant comet in six years of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) data following a comprehensive search. The comet has never been exposed to our solar system and is estimated to be about 1,000 times bigger than a typical comet. It has been classified as a small planet because of its size . Two astronomers, Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein from the University of Pennsylvania, came across this giant comet known as Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein with the designation C/2014 UN271. This is a big find and has become the largest comet ever spotted in current times. A week after the astronomers noticed a new object in the sky, they began their research on the elongated orbit that was seen journeying inward from the distant Oort Cloud. This huge comet first appeared in 2014 on the Dark Energy Camera, following which experts Bernardinelli and Bernstein realized that the object was something big and moving with time. They both traced it again in the years 2015, 2016...

Hyundai Alcazar petrol-automatic review: Room to stretch

Image
Your friend is fresh off the boat, and has moved to Mumbai to realise his dreams. You wonder how the heck he has managed to land a plum job in this market, and make a mental note to pry for opportunities. In the meantime, you have him over for drinks and whatever you can cook up in your pitch-black, cast-iron skillet that lockdown YouTube insisted you must have. Ready-to-fry cutlets it will be, but cooked with care and craftsmanship. You’re quite proud of your three-BHK home that is sparsely (but tastefully) decorated. You casually show him around, trying not to flex much. He smiles, makes the right impressed noises and you both return to your drinks. Your friend is from the NCR region. You’re in Goregaon. His toilet is the size of your living room. And yet, he acts impressed. This is true friendship. I painted this picture because much like Mumbai three-BHKs, most three-row SUVs in India are only just enough to technically qualify as seven-seaters. Our bedrooms barely fit a queen-s...

'Hope to resolve soon,' says SII's Adar Poonawalla after Covishield is not included in EMA's vaccine list for Green Pass

Serum Institute of India's COVID-19 vaccine has been excluded from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) list of approved vaccines for the European Union (EU) Green Pass. This means that people who have been vaccinated with Covishield may face some issues while travelling to any of the EU countries. However, it does recognise Vaxzervria - the version of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine that is manufactured in the UK or other sites around Europe.
